Question by Erin: Sunny Sundown….Do you like?
I’m going to put this poem in verse by verse so it might be awhile until i get the whole thing
Those who worked Redtail mine were fed up with the boss
They gathered round the office like blackflies around a hoss
“No wages these 3 months” one cried, “Let’s hand the lousy rat
He’ll starve our very children, while himself gets fat.
And true enough, behind the doorm a fat man shook & wept
The wobbling bags beneath his eyes said that this man hadn’t slept
A messenger had brought him word, that made him feel his age
Valdez, last night – the third straight month- had robbed the payroll stage.
And now the mob broke down the doo & now the found a rope
Now the boss was on his knee, a prayer was his last hope
“Oh God, I’m not a evil man, though everybody says
It’s all my fault, that we ain’t caught the devil called Valdez
Oh God, If you would ransom me from those who’d have me swing
Please find the man & send him, who can plug the bandit king-”
Then each man felt the air still, a stab of dread
Each heard the sound of danger in a mustang’s tread
All watched the horse trot down the street, All watched the rider halt
They watched him seize them, man by man, as if he knew each fault
His clothes and hat were as black as ink, his dancing mustang pale
Those eyes were blue and hard enough to make the sun turn tail
He said, “You hang this man, I’ll do you all the same,
I don’t much like a mob- and Sundown is my name”
Each man eyed the gun that hung at his hip
And they all agreed to give the man no lip
And so they told him about the theif Valdez and the pay roll scandal
The rider smiled and simply said, “That devil Valdez I can surely handle.”
The men stood in stupor and they begged him not to go
The rider tipped his hat, and rode off into the sun’s red glow
And so Sunny Sundown tracked the bandit king
For tracking Valdez was of no simple thing
For all the havoc that he wrecked, he sure did clean up good
And whereever Sundown went, Valdez surely stood.
Sundown passed through villiages where Valdez came
The villiagers told their stories but to Sundown it was all the same
Traveling day and night, and still no Valdez in his sight
Following the path of the bandit’s flight
Sundown followed him down a canyon’s wall
And at the bottom stood a man 6 feet tall.
He was dressed in clothes, the color of a moonless night
The man tilted his head, “Now you’ve found me, are you ready to fight?”
Sundown studied the evil man, “You ar the one they call Valdez?”
The bandit fingered at the leather at his hip, “So they all says”
A smile nearly broke Sundown’s face, “It’s nearly all the same
A bullet barely ripped before Valdea cleared leather, “And Sundown’s my name.”
Valdez’s broken body crumpled to the ground
And so the story ends with Valdez’s death by Sundown……
